SUMMARY:Thesis defense: Transportation Mission-Based Optimization of Heavy Combination Road Vehicles...
DESCRIPTION:Doctoral thesis defence by Toheed Ghandriz \nAbstract:\n“Transportation Mission-Based Optimization of Heavy Combination Road Vehicles and Distributed Propulsion\, Including Predictive Energy and Motion Control”\n \nThis thesis proposes methodologies to improve heavy vehicle design by reducing the total cost of ownership and by increasing energy efficiency and safety. \nEnvironmental issues\, consumers expectations and the growing demand for freight transport have created a competitive environment in providing better transportation solutions. In this thesis\, it is proposed that freight vehicles can be designed in a more cost- and energy-efficient manner if they are customized for narrow ranges of operational domains and transportation use-cases. For this purpose\, optimization-based methods were applied to minimize the total cost of ownership and to deliver customized vehicles with tailored propulsion components that best fit the given transportation missions and operational environment. Optimization-based design of the vehicle components was found to be effective due to the simultaneous consideration of the optimization of the transportation mission infrastructure\, including charging stations\, loading-unloading\, routing and fleet composition and size\, especially in case of electrified propulsion. Implementing integrated vehicle hardware-transportation optimization could reduce the total cost of ownership by up to 35\% in the case of battery electric heavy vehicles… \nMore information and the meeting link: https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/m2/calendar/Pages/Transportation-Mission-Based-Optimization-of-Heavy-Combination-Road-Vehicles-and-Distributed-Propulsion-Including-Predictiv.aspx \nRead complete thesis abstract: https://research.chalmers.se/en/publication/520358

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar about Electric flights
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to this lunch seminar about Electric flights. \nRegister to event\nProf. Daniel Brandell and Doc. Cecilia Boström will present the ongoing activities within SEC at Uppsala University and thereafter Mauritz Andersson will talk about the possibilities to have electric flights. \n“Electric flights with batteries – will that work?” \nThe climate challenge is critical and aviation accounts for a significant part of the problem. The ELISE project (Electric Aviation in Sweden) accelerates the development of electric aviation with the realization that it requires many people to work together. We are now building electric aircraft with today’s technology at the same time as we are building competence for the possibilities of the future. Within a decade\, domestic aviation will be able to be largely electrified. Flying on electricity can be both resource-efficient and energy-efficient! \nWe will return closer to the seminar if there will be opportunities to participate on site in Uppsala. \nPress here to dowload inivation\, pdf>>

SUMMARY:How can we understand electric roads – five questions and (probably more than) five answers
DESCRIPTION:On the 15th of October the government announced that Sweden will build 2\,000 km of electric roads by 2030. But what does that mean? Is 2\,000 km a lot or is it too few? \nKTH will try to answer all of your questions regarding electric roads in a breakfast seminar with five experts on the different aspects of electrification of our roads. Join KTH together with the moderator Peter Georén to answer:\n– What is an electric road? Are there different techniques? (Karin Ebbinghaus)\n– Why (or why not) should we build electric roads? (Maria Bratt Börjesson)\n– Where should we build the electric roads? (Gyözö Gidofalvi)\n– How do we pay for the electricity? (Mats Engwall)\n– Who should build and maintain the roads? (Björn Hasselgren) \nFor more information press here >>

SUMMARY:Circular Business Models for Extended EV Battery Life
DESCRIPTION:Swedish Electromobility Centre are happy to welcome you to our online seminar on Circular Business Models for Extended EV Battery Life\, 21 October 2020 \nLife After Use: Circular Economy Business Models for the Second-Life of EV Batteries\nThe ongoing electrification will dramatically increase the number of batteries in the society. A challenge that needs to be addressed already\, is how to deal with the large volumes of used and degraded EV batteries in a close future. One way could be to give the batteries a second-life\, thus reusing them within another application. This presentation will elaborate upon how a second-life could be facilitated by the use of circular economy business models and also about the components of a potential future value chain.\nJohn Fransson & Fredrik Josefson\, thesis project\, Chalmers \nPerspectives on business model development for second-use of traction batteries\nRISE Researchers Derek Diener (Sustainable Business) and Sara Fallahi (Digital Innovation) present insights from their ongoing work in projects on circular business model innovation related to lithium-ion traction batteries. Perspectives from actors of the existing and potential business ecosystem demonstrate both challenges and opportunities to preserve and capture value of traction batteries long after the first planned use.\nDerek Diener\, Senior Researcher\, Sustainable Business & Sara Fallahi\, Senior Researcher\, Digital Innovation\, RISE

SUMMARY:Thesis defense: The role of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in electrifying personal transport – Analysis of empirical data from North America
DESCRIPTION:Doctoral thesis defence by Ahmet Mandev \nTIME: 1 October 2020 at 13:15\nWHERE: VENUE: Online via zoom\, https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/64063052436 (Password: 013668)\nSUERVISOR: Frances Sprei\, Chalmers university of technology\nOPPONENT: DR Patrick Jochem\, Head of Department Energy System Analysis\, DLR\, Germany \nABSTRACT \n“The role of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in electrifying personal transport – Analysis of empirical data from North America“ \nPlug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) can help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector\, combined with the decarbonization of the electricity sector\, and play an important role in electrifying personal transport. This thesis uses empirical data from North America to investigate the role of PHEVs in electrifying personal transport\, with a focus on the household context and charging behavior. There is a lack of assessment of electrification at the household level in the literature and Paper I fills this gap by analyzing how household factors impact the share of electrification of vehicle miles travelled (eVMT) considering all vehicles in the household. There is also a lack of empirical studies in the literature analyzing the charging behavior for large samples of PHEV users. Paper II fills this gap with an analysis of a large sample and long observation period for Chevrolet Volt (a long-range PHEV) in North America. To the authors’ best knowledge\, it is the first study to map out the range of charging behavior with additional daytime charging and no overnight charging frequencies. Previous studies in the literature have analyzed well-to-wheel greenhouse gas emissions of PHEVs but neglect the effect of charging behavior on tail-pipe emissions. Paper III fills this gap by quantifying the environmental effects of PHEV charging behavior with a focus on tail-pipe emissions of a long range PHEV such as the Chevrolet Volt. \nOur results indicate that PHEVs with a range of at least 35 US miles (56 km) have an important role to play\, especially in the electrification of vehicle miles travelled within the household context where they can achieve as much electrification as some battery electric vehicles; regular overnight charging can have a noteworthy reduction on tail pipe emissions of PHEVs and substantially increase share of electrification of miles; and policy for PHEVs should prioritize easy access to overnight charging above public and workplace infrastructure to achieve high shares of electrification. \nMore information: https://research.chalmers.se/publication/51
