SUMMARY:Public PhD defense - Therese Lundblad
DESCRIPTION:Therese Lundblad\, Chalmers University of Technology will defend her PhD thesis “Energy Infrastructure for Road Transport Electrification – Modeling Hydrogen Supply\, Electric Vehicle Charging\, and Grid Constraints. \nDate: 17 April.\nTime: 10:00 — 13:00\nLocation: HA1\, Hörsalsvägen 4 and online\nOpponent: prof. Patrick Plötz\, Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI\, Germany \nVisit for more information: https://research.chalmers.se/publication/551268 \nPopular science description: \nElectrifying road transportation requires more than just electric vehicles; it also requires new infrastructure to supply energy in different forms. This thesis models the infrastructure needed in Sweden for two different approaches to electrification: using hydrogen as a fuel and directly charging battery electric vehicles. \nFor indirect electrification by hydrogen\, several ways of supplying hydrogen to refueling stations were compared. Producing hydrogen directly at the refueling station using electricity from the grid was found to be the cheapest option. This system is more cost-effective than either a system that produces hydrogen onsite in “island-mode” without being connected to the electricity grid or a system where hydrogen is produced at a central facility and transported to the refueling station. \nFor direct electrification\, this thesis investigates how home charging of electric vehicles could affect local electricity grids. Electric vehicle charging was analyzed under electricity spot prices (that reflect the balance between electricity generation and demand in an electricity price area)\, combined with different network tariff designs (which are the fees households pay the grid owner to use the electricity grid). The results show that the risk of overloading in the local grid increases as the share of electric vehicles increases. However\, the impacts vary greatly between different areas and are strongly dependent on how the vehicles are charged. \nThe modeling in this work shows that network tariff design has a large impact on when and to what extent it is cheapest to charge electric vehicles. Some tariff designs allow electric vehicles the flexibility to follow varying spot prices of electricity\, but at the cost of increased loading on the local grid. Other designs limit the loading on the local grid but give vehicles lower flexibility to follow low spot prices. The results thereby reveal a tradeoff between adapting electric vehicle charging to low electricity spot prices and reducing loading on the local grid. A network tariff for the combined peak power of households provides a compromise that reduces the load on the grid\, while still allowing for some flexibility.

SUMMARY:Doctoral defence - Batteries at Crossroads: Past\, Present\, and Future Environmental Impacts of Lithium-ion Batteries
DESCRIPTION:Docotral thesis defence – Mudit Chordia\, Chalmers University of Technology \nTitle: Batteries at Crossroads: Past\, Present\, and Future Environmental Impacts of Lithium-ion Batteries \nThesis (public): https://research.chalmers.se/en/publication/547988 \nWhen: Monday\, 24 September\, 13:15 \nWhere: Vasa B (building Vasa Hus 2). Vera Sandbergs Allé 8. Entrance Floor. Room 2221 (hybrid) \nOnline: https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/61346020623 \nFull abstract and updated information can be found at Chalmers University of Technology’s website: https://www.chalmers.se/en/current/calendar/Mudit-Chordia-547988/ \nElectric cars are growing fast\, and so is the demand for the batteries that power them. While batteries are vital for cutting climate emissions\, making them also leaves its own mark on the planet. This thesis looks at three big parts of a battery’s journey: how raw materials are mined\, how batteries are built in large factories\, and what happens to them at the end of their life. The findings show that bigger factories can make batteries more efficiently\, but they also bring new challenges like higher emissions at the production site. Mining\, in particular\, can have very different impacts depending on where and how it is done\, and future reliance on lower-grade ores may drive these impacts even higher. The research also shows that the way we measure impacts can change the results — with past assessments often based on unrepresentative data\, present results shaped by high variability in supply chains and study scope\, and future outcomes likely to diverge further as data choices and methods evolve. In short\, batteries are essential for a cleaner future\, but their footprint must be carefully tracked as technology and supply chains change.

SUMMARY:Theme 2 Workshop - Additive Manufacturing of Electrical Machines
DESCRIPTION:Electrical machine topologies have been traditionally limited by the manufacturing methods available. The electric steel laminations normally used to minimize core losses make geometries other than 2D extruded difficult and expensive to manufacture. In the same way\, the layout of the windings is also limited by both the wire geometry and size\, as well as the insertion method and the end-turn arrangement. This is particularly challenging when using square conductors\, since they cannot be bundled and bent in the same way as thinner round wires. However\, new manufacturing methods\, such as additive manufacturing\, enable a much larger geometry flexibility. \nThe German company Additive Drives (invited to the Workshop) has developed several products using this technology\, and counts with VW\, Porsche\, Rolls Royce\, Ford\, Toyota and Airbus among their customers. In Sweden\, RISE has established an Application Centre for Additive Manufacturing in order to promote the adoption of the technology across Sweden\, thus contributing to a sustainable transition and resilient value chains. Together\, Lund University and RISE run a SEC funded prestudy to investigate how the additional design freedom provided by Additive Manufacturing can be used to enhance cooling in the end-windings. In this Workshop\, we will learn from the experiences of both Additive Drives and RISE Application Centre for Additive Manufacturing. \nMoreover\, we will have the opportunity to visit RISE facilities and take a look at their equipment to gain firsthand experience on the manufacturing possibilities. The day will conclude with a joint exercise to identify interesting research topics and collaboration opportunities. \n  \nAgenda\n10.00-10.15    Welcome – Intro SEC & Tema 2 \n10.15-11.00    RISE: Improving electric machine performance through additive manufacturing \n11.00-11.45    Additive Drives: From prototype to production – the Additive Drives Story \n11.45-12.45    Lunch \n12.45-13.30    Study visit to RISE Additive Manufacturing Application Centre \n13.30-14.45    Workshop: Future research questions and collaboration possibilities \n14.45-15.00    Conclusion More information: Additive Drives is developer and manufacturer of high performance eMotors. \n  \nAdditive Drives offers innovative 3D printed electric drives and improve the performance of your electric motors by up to 45% – whether hairpin\, single coil or other electric motor designs. \nhttps://www.additive-drives.de/en/ \nRISE Application Center for Additive Manufacturing is a co-creation area where industrial partners\, research institutes\, and academia collaborate to push the boundaries of additive manufacturing. SUMMARY:Theme 2 – Workshop: ICEM 2022 Summary
DESCRIPTION:Swedish Electromobility Centre and Theme 2 Electric Drives and Charging are happy to welcome you to the workshop “ICEM 2022 Summary”. The International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM) is a biannual conference that gathers high-quality research reporting on electrical machines R&D. This year it ran in Valencia\, Spain between 5-8 September 2022 (https://www.icem.cc/2022/). Sweden was well represented at ICEM 2022 with several papers from most of the SEC member universities\, but still\, there are many SEC members that were unable to participate. \n  \nGiven the importance of the conference to SEC Theme 2\, we have decided to make a Workshop that summarizes the papers presented. It is divided in two parts: \n  \nI) one with a summary of the Swedish contributions\, and \nII) one with a summary of the non-Swedish contributions. \n  \nThe purpose is for you to get a good overview of trends\, focal areas\, and “takeaways” from the conference. We devote time in the workshop for a discussion on what the trends seen mean for the research planning in SEC. \n  \nThe workshop is hosted by KTH and will be available for both physical attendance and Internet attendance. \n  \nAgenda\n09:30 – 10:00 Registration\, Coffee\, Mingle (Hall D3) \n10:00 – 12:00 Presentation of summaries of Swedish contributions to ICEM 2022 (Hall D3) \n12:00 – 13:00 Lunch \n13:00 – 14:00 Presentation of summaries of Non-Swedish contributions to ICEM 2022 (Hall E3) \n14:00 – 15:00 Discussion of conclusions from what is presented (Hall E3) \n15:00 End of Workshop \n  \nLocations\nKTH\, Hall D3: https://www.kth.se/places/room/id/4e66e1af-3d92-4584-8559-b229d5f1030e \nKTH\, Hall E3: https://www.kth.se/places/room/id/6d0a6f99-d756-4941-97e5-977a0db6c619 \n  \nZoom link\nZoom link will be sent by e-mail to those who register closer to the event. \n  \nThis workshop is for SEC partners only. \nFor questions\, please contact Luca Peretti: lucap@kth.se \nYou are all most welcome! \n  \n

SUMMARY:SEC Doctoral Network Lunch Webinar – E.ON – "ELITE – EL Infrastrukturens Tillpassning för E-fordon"
DESCRIPTION:On 7 September we welcome Neil Hancock from E.ON for a lunch webinar: \n  \nAs the ‘Programme Leader’ for the ‘Asset Management programme’ within EED I have one of the best jobs in the world! Born in S.Africa\, raised in Australia\, and with working experience from (amongst others) Holland\, Austria\, Germany\, Sweden\, China\, and Russia I guess you could call me somewhat international. With degrees in “Materials Engineering” and “Chemistry”\, I was thrown into the development of multiple battery systems and was exposed to renewable energy systems. From there I have worked with diverse companies both process/production and electricity. My certifications in project management have allowed me to deliver major projects globally\, with an increasing focus on digital solutions. EON has given me the opportunity to work on projects such as SIMRIS; Local Balancing (Local energy solutions for islanded communities) and ELITE where the common theme of which is the delivery of high-quality electricity to consumers\, continuously and without interruption regardless of location. \n  \nThe E.ON Group is one of Europe’s largest operators of energy networks and energy infrastructure and a provider of innovative customer solutions for 50 million customers. Thus\, we are decisively driving forward the energy transition in Europe and are committed to sustainability\, climate protection\, and the future of our planet. E.ON Energidistribution AB (EED) is a company found within the above corporation. Its sole focus is the distribution of electricity (Distribution System Operator) to roughly 1\,1 million points of delivery across Sweden. \n  \nThe webinar will be held in English. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Theme 2 – Manufacturing of Electrical Machines
DESCRIPTION:Swedish Electromobility Centre and Theme 2 Electric Drives and Charging are happy to welcome you to the workshop Manufacturing of Electrical Machines. The impact of electric machine manufacturing on electric drive performance is an important issue within e-mobility research and has been the focus of several projects within SEC. Currently\, there is an SEC associate project named Manufacturing Effects in Electric Machines (MEEM)\, which is a follow-up from a pre-study of the same name completed in SEC Phase IV\, and many more notable works outside of the SEC regarding this interesting topic. \n  \nIn this workshop\, we will receive information on the aforementioned pre-study and the ongoing associated project MEEM. Moreover\, there will be guest speakers from academia and industry to present their research and exciting findings regarding machine manufacturing\, followed by a discussion session. This workshop is gracefully hosted by BorgWarner at their facilities at Landskrona and therefore there will be a BorgWarner factory tour of two production lines for traction machines\, one utilizing a continuous and one with conventional hairpin winding\, furthermore a presentation from BorgWarner regarding their efforts in machine manufacturing. \n  \nYou are all most welcome! \n  \n
