SUMMARY:Cross-theme webinar: Status and prospects of the sodium-ion battery production system until 2030 – the 2025 update
DESCRIPTION:Theme (4) Environment and Society\, and Theme (3) Energy storage invite you to this cross-theme webinar. \nRickard Arvidsson\, associate professor at Chalmers University of Technology\, will present results from an ongoing research project entitled “Projecting future sodium-ion battery production and use”. \nIn this project\, Rickard Arvidsson\, Julia Brunke and Björn A. Sandén (Chalmers) have investigated the current and future production system for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The study covers the production volume of SIBs from 2022 to 2030\, the main producers of SIBs\, their geographical location\, the main types of SIBs produced\, their gravimetric energy density\, and in which applications they will be used. \nThe study concludes that lithium-ion batteries are likely to be accompanied by SIBs as a smaller\, yet significant “sibling” in the near future. \n  \nTime           09:00-10:00\nDate            7 May 2026\nLocation     Teams – the link will be sent to those who register \n  \nClick HERE to register for the webinar. \nRegister by 15:00 on 5 May 2026.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Vehicle–Grid Interaction and Energy Storage: Workshop on vehicle batteries\, stationary batteries\, and second-life applications
DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKSHOP IS POSTPONED. UPDATE WITH A NEW DATE WILL FOLLOW. \nTheme (5) Vehicle-Grid Interaction and Theme (3) Energy Storage invite to a cross-theme workshop. \nThe electrification of the transport sector and the rapid development of energy storage are creating a growing need to understand the interaction between vehicle batteries\, stationary battery systems\, and the possibilities for second-life use. \nThe requirements\, life cycles\, and operating environments differ significantly between batteries ‘on wheels’ and ‘in place\,’ which affects their design\, aging\, and reuse potential. \nSEC partners will be invited to present and share their know-how and perspectives. A Q&A session will follow. \n  \nDate       23 January 2026 \nTime      13:00-14:30 \nWhere    Online Zoom – you’ll receive the Zoom link in the confirmation e-mail upon registration. \n  \nPlease register for the workshop HERE. \nRegister by 16 January 2026 at 17:00.

SUMMARY:Doctoral defence - Batteries at Crossroads: Past\, Present\, and Future Environmental Impacts of Lithium-ion Batteries
DESCRIPTION:Docotral thesis defence – Mudit Chordia\, Chalmers University of Technology \nTitle: Batteries at Crossroads: Past\, Present\, and Future Environmental Impacts of Lithium-ion Batteries \nThesis (public): https://research.chalmers.se/en/publication/547988 \nWhen: Monday\, 24 September\, 13:15 \nWhere: Vasa B (building Vasa Hus 2). Vera Sandbergs Allé 8. Entrance Floor. Room 2221 (hybrid) \nOnline: https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/61346020623 \nFull abstract and updated information can be found at Chalmers University of Technology’s website: https://www.chalmers.se/en/current/calendar/Mudit-Chordia-547988/ \nElectric cars are growing fast\, and so is the demand for the batteries that power them. While batteries are vital for cutting climate emissions\, making them also leaves its own mark on the planet. This thesis looks at three big parts of a battery’s journey: how raw materials are mined\, how batteries are built in large factories\, and what happens to them at the end of their life. The findings show that bigger factories can make batteries more efficiently\, but they also bring new challenges like higher emissions at the production site. Mining\, in particular\, can have very different impacts depending on where and how it is done\, and future reliance on lower-grade ores may drive these impacts even higher. The research also shows that the way we measure impacts can change the results — with past assessments often based on unrepresentative data\, present results shaped by high variability in supply chains and study scope\, and future outcomes likely to diverge further as data choices and methods evolve. In short\, batteries are essential for a cleaner future\, but their footprint must be carefully tracked as technology and supply chains change.

SUMMARY:Cross-theme workshop: Milestones for large-scale implementation of electromobility
DESCRIPTION:– Join us in a cross-theme workshop to identify and describe the milestones needed for a large implementation of electromobility. \nThe sustainable transport of the future will require a substantial part of the transport system being electrified. Sweden has an important role in making this happen. What is needed\, what are the milestones ahead? The answer to this will be investigated both from theme and cross-theme perspective resulting in a timeline of milestones to be included in SEC road map. \nScania will kick-off the workshop with an introduction to their work with scenarios and a road map for electromobility\, what could the electrified future look like. \nFor SEC members only. \n  \nDate: 12 March \nTime: 10.30-16:00 \nWhere: Chalmersska Huset\, Södra Hamngatan 11\, 411 14  Göteborg \nYou will be served lunch and fika. \nOn 21 March at 13:30-14.30 a presentation of results will be held online for the workshop participants. \n  \nFor REGISTRATION please click here. \nDeadline for registration is 4 March at 12:00. \nNote: It’s a limited number of spots available for the workshop. If you get prevented from participating\, please contact administration@emobilitycentre.se as soon as possible. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Fuel Cells in Transport
DESCRIPTION:Fuel cell technology is a promising complement to batteries for vehicles with high energy demand for long ranges and heavy loads. They are specifically suitable for aircrafts\, ships\, trains and heavy duty trucks. The focus of this workshop will be fuel cell lifetime and performance evaluation\, fuel cell integration into trains and hydrogen safety. We are especially pleased that Professor Erik Kjaeng\, Canada Research Chair in Fuel Cell Science and Technology Development at Simon Fraser University\, will present some of his research on PEMFC aging that he has conducted through the years\, often in close collaboration with the Canadian fuel cell company Ballard. \n  \nAgenda: \n  \n14:00 Introduction and presentation of Pre study on Fuel cell durability\, Anneli Jedenmalm\, ABB\n14:20 Hydrogen trains\,  Peter Mellberg\, Alstrom Group\n14:40 Hydrogen safety\, Andre Gaathaug\, University of South-Eastern\, Norway\n15:00 Aging of PEMFC\, Erik Kjeang\, Simon Fraser University\, Vancouver \n15:40 Internal SEC discussion Future plans and proposals\, moderator: Anneli Jenenmalm \n16:30 End of workshop
