SUMMARY:Workshop Theme 1 Intelligent Vehicles & Systems: A hands-on introduction to the ECCV simulation platform
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to simulate electric vehicles\, without building a model from scratch? Then this is your opportunity. \nThe ElectroChemical Commercial Vehicle (ECCV) simulation platform has been developed over several years where projects have investigated different aspects of fuel cell and battery electric vehicles\, the elements of these aspects have been integrated into a library of submodes and system models. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about the models and get an introduction to how you can get started and simulate different vehicles in the simulation platform. \nOne purpose has been to enable researchers and students that work on elements in the electromobility area to start simulating the vehicle as a complete system and get a tool into which they can incorporate their research into the vehicle context. Another purpose has been to enable simulations of the impact of thermal system design on vehicle energy consumption and performance. \nThe simulation platform is focused on the energy needed of a commercial vehicle in a driving mission over undulating roads and mountains\, in different climates and incorporates the NASA tropospheric model to describe variations in ambient conditions at different altitudes. It includes component models for several subsystems. For example: \n  \n– Battery models with voltage and current dynamics based on dynamic data from datasets on commercial cells. \n– Fuel cell system models with fuel cell core and necessary balance of plant components. \n– Coolant system components including various heat exchangers\, and effects such as heating with direct heat and heatpumps\, as well as access to various cooling media components. \n– Electric Machines\, from simple ideal machines to more advanced machines with lumped losses. \n– Power electronics\, DC/DC converters (connecting battery\, electric machine\, fuel cell\, and Low voltage systems to the DC bus)\, capacitor model for the DC bus. \n  \nIn this workshop we will go through the basic component models in the library and the thoughts behind the library design. Then we will go through a sequence of complete vehicle examples that are included in the library as quick start examples. After the presentations of the library you will have a possibility to start testing the simulation models that are available among the quick start examples on your own computer. \n–> You need to bring a computer with Matlab/Simulink but no other toolboxes are necessary. \n  \nPreliminary program\n09.30-10.15 Coffee and sandwich \n10.15-10.20 Welcome and introductions \n10.20-12.00 Walk through of the library components and available system models \n12.00-13.15 Lunch \n13.15-15.00 Hands on-work with the simulation models in the platform \n15.00-15.15 Coffee \n15.15-16.00 Continued hands-on work and follow up \n  \nDate            14 May at 10:00-16:00 \nLocation     Hybrid workshop at Linköping University and Teams (further details will be provided those who register) \n  \nPlease\, click HERE to register for the workshop. \nRegister by 9 May at 23:59.

SUMMARY:Cross-theme workshop: Charging infrastructure – challenges and opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Charging infrastructure is undoubtably a key enabler of electrification. Linking two critical infrastructure systems together\, the electric power system and the transport system\, charging infrastructure affects almost every aspect of electromobility at both system and vehicle levels: resilience and reliability\, operational efficiency (logistics)\, energy efficiency\, vehicle configuration\, cost (both CAPEX and OPEX)\, etc. Moreover\, charging infrastructure will have an influence on future power grids\, since it may have an impact on energy consumption patterns\, penetration of renewables\, electricity tariffs\, etc. \n  \nFor all these reasons\, Charging Infrastructure must be reflected in the Research Roadmap for SEC Phase VI. This cross-theme workshop will serve as a first collective brainstorming session to identify relevant research topics concerning charging infrastructure. The results from this workshop will be analysed by the theme leaders\, classified according to the different themes\, and then incorporated into the themes’ roadmaps when applicable. \n  \nPreliminary agenda\n10:00 – Welcome and introduction \n10:15 – Charging Infrastructure research from SEC Themes’ perspective \n11:45 – Summary of the Theme perspectives \n12:00 – Lunch \n13:00 – Industrial insight \n14:00 – Workshop exercise. Starting from the topics proposed by the themes and the industrial participants in their presentations we will: \na) Propose additional topics that might be missing\nb) Vote in order to establish priorities \n15:00 – As a final exercise\, we will exercise our fantasy a bit\, considering if / how the proposed “important topics” might change in some extreme future scenarios \n15:30 – Summary and closing remarks \n  \nDate           20 March \nTime          10:00-15:45 \nVenue         Lund University (more information will follow) \n  \nPlease\, click HERE to register for the workshop. \nDeadline for registration by 14 March at 12:00.

SUMMARY:Theme (2) Electric Drives & Charging – Workshop: Axial-flux electrical machines in traction applications
DESCRIPTION:Axial-flux machines are a relatively uncommon type of electrical machines in which the magnetic field propagates along the axial direction rather than the radial direction\, as in most common machine types. Compared to radial-flux machines\, axial-flux machines are usually shorter but wider\, sometimes referred to as “pancake motors” because of their shape. They can achieve very high torque densities\, but generally operate at lower speeds\, making them particularly suitable for certain applications such as in-wheel motors\, direct-drives\, or some topologies of HEVs. \n  \nIn this workshop\, a teardown of the most popular axial-flux machine in the automotive industry today\, the YASA (Yokeless And Segmented Armature) motor\, will be presented. Additionally\, the main opportunities and challenges with axial-flux machines will be discussed\, and a final exercise will be conducted aiming to identify research gaps and future project ideas. \n  \nPreliminary agenda (to be updated)\n09:30 – Welcome fika\n10:00 – Official start. Introduction to SEC Theme 2\n10:05 – Introduction to our host: Aurobay – a new SEC program partner!\n10:25 – Brief introduction to axial-flux motors by Sonja Lundmark\n10:45 – Introduction to Alvier Mech. Teardown of YASA and others\n12:00 – Lunch\n13:00 – “Highlights from my PhD on thermal management of YASA motors” by ‪Robert Camilleri\n13:30 – Group discussions\n14:30 – Summarising group discussions and conclusions\n15:00 – That’s all folks!\n  \nWhen         6 November at 10:00-15:00 \nWhere        Aurobay HQ\, Pumpgatan 1\, 417 55  Göteborg \n  \nPlease click HERE to register for the workshop. \nDeadline for registration by 30 October at 10:00 (recently updated from 30 October at 23:59). \nNotice! SUMMARY:Theme 2 Workshop - Additive Manufacturing of Electrical Machines
DESCRIPTION:Electrical machine topologies have been traditionally limited by the manufacturing methods available. The electric steel laminations normally used to minimize core losses make geometries other than 2D extruded difficult and expensive to manufacture. In the same way\, the layout of the windings is also limited by both the wire geometry and size\, as well as the insertion method and the end-turn arrangement. This is particularly challenging when using square conductors\, since they cannot be bundled and bent in the same way as thinner round wires. However\, new manufacturing methods\, such as additive manufacturing\, enable a much larger geometry flexibility. \nThe German company Additive Drives (invited to the Workshop) has developed several products using this technology\, and counts with VW\, Porsche\, Rolls Royce\, Ford\, Toyota and Airbus among their customers. In Sweden\, RISE has established an Application Centre for Additive Manufacturing in order to promote the adoption of the technology across Sweden\, thus contributing to a sustainable transition and resilient value chains. Together\, Lund University and RISE run a SEC funded prestudy to investigate how the additional design freedom provided by Additive Manufacturing can be used to enhance cooling in the end-windings. In this Workshop\, we will learn from the experiences of both Additive Drives and RISE Application Centre for Additive Manufacturing. \nMoreover\, we will have the opportunity to visit RISE facilities and take a look at their equipment to gain firsthand experience on the manufacturing possibilities. The day will conclude with a joint exercise to identify interesting research topics and collaboration opportunities. \n  \nAgenda\n10.00-10.15    Welcome – Intro SEC & Tema 2 \n10.15-11.00    RISE: Improving electric machine performance through additive manufacturing \n11.00-11.45    Additive Drives: From prototype to production – the Additive Drives Story \n11.45-12.45    Lunch \n12.45-13.30    Study visit to RISE Additive Manufacturing Application Centre \n13.30-14.45    Workshop: Future research questions and collaboration possibilities \n14.45-15.00    Conclusion More information: Additive Drives is developer and manufacturer of high performance eMotors. \n  \nAdditive Drives offers innovative 3D printed electric drives and improve the performance of your electric motors by up to 45% – whether hairpin\, single coil or other electric motor designs. \nhttps://www.additive-drives.de/en/ \nRISE Application Center for Additive Manufacturing is a co-creation area where industrial partners\, research institutes\, and academia collaborate to push the boundaries of additive manufacturing. By making additive manufacturing accessible to businesses of all sizes\, RISE Application Center for Additive Manufacturing promotes the adoption of the technology across Sweden\, thus contributing to a sustainable transition and resilient value chains. \nhttps://www.ri.se/en/am-center \n  \nWhen     10:00-15:00 on 11 June \nWhere    RISE\, Argongatan 30\, 431 53 Mölndal \n  \nPLEASE CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE WORKSHOP. \nLast day for registration is 4 June at 14:00.
