SUMMARY:Circular Business Models for Extended EV Battery Life
DESCRIPTION:Swedish Electromobility Centre are happy to welcome you to our online seminar on Circular Business Models for Extended EV Battery Life\, 21 October 2020 \nLife After Use: Circular Economy Business Models for the Second-Life of EV Batteries\nThe ongoing electrification will dramatically increase the number of batteries in the society. A challenge that needs to be addressed already\, is how to deal with the large volumes of used and degraded EV batteries in a close future. One way could be to give the batteries a second-life\, thus reusing them within another application. This presentation will elaborate upon how a second-life could be facilitated by the use of circular economy business models and also about the components of a potential future value chain.\nJohn Fransson & Fredrik Josefson\, thesis project\, Chalmers \nPerspectives on business model development for second-use of traction batteries\nRISE Researchers Derek Diener (Sustainable Business) and Sara Fallahi (Digital Innovation) present insights from their ongoing work in projects on circular business model innovation related to lithium-ion traction batteries. Perspectives from actors of the existing and potential business ecosystem demonstrate both challenges and opportunities to preserve and capture value of traction batteries long after the first planned use.\nDerek Diener\, Senior Researcher\, Sustainable Business & Sara Fallahi\, Senior Researcher\, Digital Innovation\, RISE

SUMMARY:Thesis defense: The role of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in electrifying personal transport – Analysis of empirical data from North America
DESCRIPTION:Doctoral thesis defence by Ahmet Mandev \nTIME: 1 October 2020 at 13:15\nWHERE: VENUE: Online via zoom\, https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/64063052436 (Password: 013668)\nSUERVISOR: Frances Sprei\, Chalmers university of technology\nOPPONENT: DR Patrick Jochem\, Head of Department Energy System Analysis\, DLR\, Germany \nABSTRACT \n“The role of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in electrifying personal transport – Analysis of empirical data from North America“ \nPlug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) can help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector\, combined with the decarbonization of the electricity sector\, and play an important role in electrifying personal transport. This thesis uses empirical data from North America to investigate the role of PHEVs in electrifying personal transport\, with a focus on the household context and charging behavior. There is a lack of assessment of electrification at the household level in the literature and Paper I fills this gap by analyzing how household factors impact the share of electrification of vehicle miles travelled (eVMT) considering all vehicles in the household. There is also a lack of empirical studies in the literature analyzing the charging behavior for large samples of PHEV users. Paper II fills this gap with an analysis of a large sample and long observation period for Chevrolet Volt (a long-range PHEV) in North America. To the authors’ best knowledge\, it is the first study to map out the range of charging behavior with additional daytime charging and no overnight charging frequencies. Previous studies in the literature have analyzed well-to-wheel greenhouse gas emissions of PHEVs but neglect the effect of charging behavior on tail-pipe emissions. Paper III fills this gap by quantifying the environmental effects of PHEV charging behavior with a focus on tail-pipe emissions of a long range PHEV such as the Chevrolet Volt. \nOur results indicate that PHEVs with a range of at least 35 US miles (56 km) have an important role to play\, especially in the electrification of vehicle miles travelled within the household context where they can achieve as much electrification as some battery electric vehicles; regular overnight charging can have a noteworthy reduction on tail pipe emissions of PHEVs and substantially increase share of electrification of miles; and policy for PHEVs should prioritize easy access to overnight charging above public and workplace infrastructure to achieve high shares of electrification. \nMore information: https://research.chalmers.se/publication/51

SUMMARY:Mid-term presentation: Evaluation of Fuel Cell/Supercapacitor Hybrid Powertrain for Automotive Applications
DESCRIPTION:Mid-Term presentation by by Qian Xun. \nTIME: 4 June 2020\, 10:00-12:00\nPLACE: Zoom link: https://chalmers.zoom.us/j/69885771207\nSUPERVISOR: Yujing Liu\, Electrical engineering\, Chalmers University of Technology\nOPPONENT: Ola Carlson\, Chalmers University of Technology \n“Evaluation of Fuel Cell/Supercapacitor Hybrid Powertrain for Automotive Applications“ \nABSTRACT\nFuel cell (FC)\, with fast-refueling time\, high energy density\, zero CO2 emission\, is becoming a promising solution for future fossil-free transportation. However\, a relatively slow dynamic response and inability to recover regenerative energy of FC make an energy buffer\, i.e. battery or supercapacitor (SC) is necessary to formulate a hybrid electric vehicle. Due to the unique characteristics of each device\, vehicle performance is dependent on different hybridization methods with FC. In this work\, three typical hybrid powertrain topologies are compared in terms of energy efficiency. With the absence of any DC/DC converters\, the efficiency of FC/SC passive hybrid powertrain is 2% higher in propulsion and 4% higher in regenerative braking than that in semi-active topologies. In the FC/SC passive hybrid system\, the power distribution between each device is inherently decided by the internal resistance\, and the DC-link voltage also varies with the power demand of the vehicle. Component models including losses and their dependency on machine speed\, torque\, and DC-link voltage are built and verified. The simulation results show that energy efficiency varies between 53−76% during propulsion for a multiplicity of drive cycles\, while it is 85-94% during braking. A 3kW lab-scaled FC/SC passive hybrid system is designed and tested\, and it shows that FC takes time to respond to the load change\, while SC provides transient power. To achieve full controllability of the power distribution between FC and SC\, a boost converter for FC and a buck-boost converter for SC are required. A low-pass filter with adaptive cut-off frequency is used to control the power allocation. The cut-off frequency is regulated based on an artificial potential field approach to avoid to over-charge or over-discharge of SC. A load disturbance compensator is proposed to suppress the DC-link voltage fluctuation during vehicle acceleration and deceleration. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by simulations and experiments. \nRead more here:\nhttps://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/e2/calendar/Pages/Interim-seminar-Qian-Xun.aspx
