Theme (4) Environment & Society seminar: Social aspects of cobalt in lithium-ion batteries
1 December,08:45-10:00

Rickard Arvidsson from Chalmers University of Technology will present the results from the research project “Blood Batteries? Social Life Cycle Impacts of Lithium-Ion Batteries” financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.
Rickard Arvidsson, Anders Nordelöf (Chalmers and VTI) and Julia Brunke (Chalmers) have investigated social impacts of lithium-ion batteries, particularly cobalt. One study investigated the negative health impacts of lithium-ion batteries, including cobalt mining, in a life-cycle perspective. Another study investigated positive health impacts from cobalt mining arising from the economic value generated. The last study investigated how cobalt mining and refining influences poverty.
During the webinar, insights from these studies, as well as broader implications for social aspects of lithium-ion batteries, will be presented.
