Seminar Theme 4: Towards Electrification of Marine Transports
17 April,13:00-14:15
This open online seminar with theme Environment & Society will focus on the electrification and use of alternative fuels for the propulsion of ships. We welcome two invited speakers to share their insight from work in the ongoing transition away from fossil fuel use in the marine sector.
First speaker: Selma Brynolf, Chalmers
Title: Hydrogen, ammonia, and battery-electric propulsion for future shipping
Tougher climate targets for shipping at global and European level forces the industry to prepare. The use of hydrogen, ammonia, or a battery-electric setup for the propulsion, are all possible options that gives no GHG emissions during ship operation, but not necessarily so in a broader life cycle perspective. Selma Brynolf, docent and researcher at Mechanical and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers, will discuss the life cycle costs and life cycle environmental impacts of these different fossil-free options, and how each is affected by the ship segment under consideration.
Second speaker: Jörgen Karlsson, ABB
Title: Zero Emission operation with the world’s largest battery ferries
Tycho Brahe and Aurora, operating in the crossing between Helsingborg and Helsingör, are the two largest Ro Pax all-battery electric ferries in the world. The system has been developed and delivered by ABB.
Jörgen Karlsson, head of Marine Sweden at ABB, will talk about the groundbreaking ForSea conversion project and how the work done has offered invaluable lessons for the future.
